The Way In is a painting that embodies curiosity, fantasy and reflection. It is through the medium of oils in which Tanis explores his memories of the vernacular buildings of the Eastern World. For many people, it is a dream which can seem untouchable. A venture into the unknown.
In his youth Tanis traveled to many towns and cities around India, Nepal and Thailand. The buildings in this impasto gilded painting are typical of dwelling entrances in India. He describes the setting as a rustic entrance to a city. His painting style is reflective of this in the way he applies the paint with palette knife and card. This is a memory painting, a moment in time vividly etched on his mind.
The beauty of these buildings’ geometry and style reflect their eastern origin. Many of these populated towns and cities have a surrounding fortress wall with an entrance, some so grand you would be overwhelmed with awe passing through their gates.
The Way In is also a metaphor for taking the step forward and take on what challenges come before us in our future.
