Often times I have seen Cormorants expertly diving for their food in all types of weather. This flock scouts and searches above the waters of Ballyconnell on Donegal Bay. They brave a nasty north Atlantic storm I remember very well on a March day. For this painting I have used oils manipulating the water with palette knife and small brushes to depict these majestic birds.

‘Cormorants- North Atlantic Storm’ is a small 9 x 9 Inch semi- abstract oil painting by Poilin Mc Gowan. It depicts a small flock of Seabirds scouting the waters of Donegal bay in storm. These birds dive into the ocean for small fish. They can go down 45 meters using their wings (a wingspan as wide as 1.1 meter) as rudders. Cormorants are expert divers and will hunt all varieties of fish. There are so many types of different species, but these ones are typical of the North west coast of Ireland. Sometimes they are referred to as ‘Shag’ by the local fishermen and are usually a good sight to see. The name cormorant in Latin ,Corvus Marinus’ means ‘Sea Raven’. Perfect for their dark appearance!
