‘Beyond Eve’s Plain II’ is a second oil painting on board of the opposite side east of Maugherow, a peninsula on the north Sligo coast. Here the painting depicts the townland of Cloonagh. My previous painting ‘Beyond Eve’s Plain I‘ is of the west side facing Raughley and Ballyconnell.
Cloonagh is a very special place, my father grew up there and as kids we would visit my grandparents in the little cottage up from the shore. My father and his father before him fished the waters surrounding Cloonagh out to Donegal bay. The sea and the shore have been sustenance for many generations, collecting sea rods, carrageen moss, winkles, whelks, muscles and limpets. Leading up the old lane way lived one of Ireland’s famous female poets Leyland Bardwell. She was a vibrant local Character inspired by her surrounds and the people.
Beyond Eve’s Plain towards the east the Dartry mountain range emerge, Benbulben, Truskmore and Benwhiskin nestling their way back into county Leitrim.
Maugherow/ Machaire Eabha in Irish is an old name for Eve’s Plain. As a result, a fertile land leading from the mountains to the sea. And a place of wild, beautiful scenery steeped in history and folklore. Maugherow always connected people to each other and to the landscape. It emanates a sense of place where time stands still like many coastal regions on the Wild Atlantic way. Here sea, land, woodland and mountain are all connected and are still a secret from the world.
