‘Beyond Eve’s Plain I’ is an oil painting on board of scenic North Sligo. The area here is specifically of the townlands of Ballyconnell & Raughley, these stretch out in the Maugherow landscape adjoining what used to be part of the Lissadell estate.
Maugherow/ Machaire Eabha in Irish is an old name for Eve’s Plain. As a result, a fertile land leading from the mountains to the sea. An ancient place of wild, beautiful scenery steeped in history and folklore. Maugherow always connected people to each other and to the landscape. It emanates a sense of place where time stands still like many coastal regions on the Wild Atlantic way. Here sea and land are all connected and are still a secret from the world.
I was inspired to paint this area as I love the colours and the textures enhanced by the change of light and weather. Here marshland, reed beds, bog lands give a sense of loneliness and vitality. Both thrive hand in hand, and I absolutely soak in the energy of such a place. I like the quite, but I also like the sounds of the landscape. Insects, the wind rustling the bull rushes, the sound of the sea beyond the promontory hill fort of Knocklane. The waves crash against the rocks in a rhythm giving solace to anyone who will listen.
