‘Benbulben Sunset’ is such a classic and iconic view from North Sligo. This painting was inspired by the beautiful views from Grange in late summer. I wanted to paint this particular view because of it’s rich colours for the time of day and year. Everything seems to illuminate with the golden sun around then. The bog lands here flourish with these wild flowers (tall pink rose-bay willow herb). I felt they provided a magnificent display in the foreground in comparison with the lush greens of the mountain. Majestic Benbulben is part of the ‘Darty Range’ mountains and is one of Ireland’s few tabletop mountains. It is a unique limestone formation created during the Ice age and is steeped in Irish folklore. Many stories date back to Celtic times, tales of heroism and adventure surround this mountain, such as Diarmuid and Grainne, Fionn Mc Cúl, Siadbh and the Fianna warriors.
Its a very unique a special part of County Sligo, everyone who knows Sligo will associate it with Benbulben. A landmark hard to miss!
Product Info
Benbulben Sunset was created from Acrylic on primed canvas. My painting is signed and titled underneath and inserted into a 4 x 4 inch mount. I’ve placed it into a 9 x 9 inch off white wooden box-frame with a hanging hook on the back. The inside of the frame includes a 30mm foam-board spacer. This creates a recess between the glass and the backing board of the frame and gives perspective to my painting. Because we at the Open Door are trying to be sustainable in today’s World, the white core mount and the backing board are both acid-free. This also means that it shouldn’t fade over time.
